After twelve years since its release, The Binding of Isaac is finally getting online multiplayer. The creator of the game, Edmund McMillen, confirmed this exciting addition on the game’s anniversary. Players can expect to team up online before the end of the year.
In a recent tweet, McMillen shared a character select screen that showcased the new online multiplayer feature. He also mentioned an “online winstreak” in the corner, indicating the competitive aspect of the multiplayer mode.
A video posted by McMillen demonstrated the character selection screen in action, featuring chaotic gameplay with four players. The footage revealed that up to four players can join an existing save or start a new one. Runs can be completed from start to finish using a dedicated online server.
Although McMillen is currently working on a new game called Mewgenics, he expressed his excitement for bringing multiplayer to The Binding of Isaac. He mentioned that this has been a long-awaited feature and is thrilled to finally make it happen. He even mentioned his daughter as a potential player in the game.
The Binding of Isaac has gained popularity since its release in 2011, with a dedicated speedrunning community. The game offers a unique roguelike experience, with over 500 items to collect and unlock. Each run is different, providing endless replayability.
The story revolves around Isaac, a young boy who faces disturbing enemies in the basement of his home. His mother, influenced by a religious awakening, believes she must sacrifice Isaac to prove her loyalty. Armed with tears as projectiles, Isaac descends deeper into the basement, encountering floors like The Womb and Sheol.
While local co-op mode and Steam’s Play Together function allowed players to share runs, the introduction of online multiplayer with a dedicated server takes the experience to a new level. The beta for the online multiplayer feature is set to release in about a month and a half, exclusively for owners of the Repentance DLC.
