Blizzard is taking a strong stance against cheaters in Overwatch 2, and now they’re targeting players who knowingly team up with them. In a recent blog post, Blizzard announced that they will be expanding their anti-cheat efforts to punish those who “conspicuously group with cheaters in an attempt to benefit from the cheating.” This new system is already active on select servers and will soon be implemented in other regions.
Blizzard wants to make it clear that they are only going after players who willingly join hackers and try to exploit their cheating to climb the ranked ladder. They have no intention of penalizing players who unknowingly end up with cheaters in their matches. So if you’re just playing the game as usual and happen to get matched with a cheater, you have nothing to worry about.
According to Blizzard, they have already banned over 250,000 cheaters in Overwatch 2 since the game’s release. While they didn’t specify the most common types of cheating, aimbots and aim assists are often reported by players. These hacks allow cheaters to have an unfair advantage, such as seeing through walls or automatically aiming at opponents.
Blizzard encourages players to continue reporting suspected cheaters so they can be thoroughly investigated. If you come across someone who is teaming up with a cheater, it’s important to report the cheater themselves if you can identify them.
In addition to cracking down on cheaters, Blizzard is also addressing the toxic behavior that plagues the game’s voice chat. They are expanding their voice chat detection systems to include more languages and types of abusive chat. This will help them effectively punish those who use Overwatch 2’s communication channels to harass others.
It’s reassuring to see Blizzard taking cheating and harassment seriously in Overwatch 2. However, only time will tell if their efforts will truly improve the game experience for players in season six.
