Overwatch 2’s latest season, Rise of Darkness, is now live, featuring a crossover event with Diablo 4 and a new PvE experience. However, the PvE activity doesn’t feel as fresh as expected.
The new PvE experience in Overwatch 2’s season seven has a strong Diablo flavor, with sound effects and loot drops directly from the dungeon-crawling ARPG series. But despite these elements, the PvE activity feels quite similar to previous ones.
In this PvE event, players select four heroes out of eight and enter a portal that transports them to a spooky dungeon resembling the final stages of the Blizzard World map. From there, it’s all about Diablo.
As the heroes battle hordes of Zomnic enemies, bosses like Demon Orisa, Loot Goblin Junkrat, and Shaman Sigma spawn and must be defeated. Defeating bosses rewards players with loot drops that feature Diablo 4’s unmistakable sound effects, including health potions with the familiar clink-gulp sound.
The most exciting part of the event is the power-ups obtained from loot drops, such as increased attack speed, attack power, and movement speed. Additionally, unique drops add special effects to player abilities, like Reinhardt’s Fire Strike spawning lava on the ground. This Diablo twist adds a fun element to the PvE formula.
The ultimate goal is to summon the two biggest bosses, Azmodan Wrecking Ball and Lilith Moira. These bosses are larger versions of their normal in-game selves, making them easier to deal with.
However, the final boss, Lilith Moira, feels surprisingly easy compared to the other bosses. Even on Hard and Expert difficulty, she poses little challenge, leaving players wondering about the anticlimactic ending.
In my opinion, the toughest boss is Orisa, who comes with her own protective bubble or an icy variant that can freeze players or create ice walls. Sigma, on the other hand, mostly stands on a balcony and shoots at players while they aim for his headshot hitbox.
As expected, the challenge increases with higher difficulty levels. Legendary runs will likely require a coordinated team and provide a tougher experience. However, compared to other PvE events, this crossover event leaves something to be desired.
Unfortunately, two of the most appealing Diablo 4 crossover skins, Lilith Moira and Inarius Pharah, are only available through the $39.99 variant of the season’s battle pass. This may disappoint players who were hoping to earn these skins through in-game challenges.
Fortunately, players can still enjoy the Bride of Junkenstein and Junkenstein’s Revenge PvE experiences for a different gameplay option. However, it’s important to note that these modes are not significantly different from each other.
