Paladins in Baldur’s Gate 3 Break Their Oaths in Bizarre Ways

Derek Morgan

A Reddit thread has emerged where players of Baldur’s Gate 3 are sharing their strangest experiences with oathbreaking, a grave offense for the Paladins of Faerun. These tales reveal how the game turns the concept of paladin oaths upside down, allowing for unexpected and often comical breaches of devotion.

The thread, titled “I broke my Paladin’s Oath in the stupidest way possible,” recounts one player’s encounter with an NPC named Arabella. In an attempt to spare her from the tragic news of her parents’ demise, the player lied about their fate. However, this act of mercy was not well-received by the DnD gods governing the world of BG3, resulting in a violation of the Oath of Devotion.

Other players chimed in with their own peculiar stories of oathbreaking. One player shared how their paladin accidentally struck a comrade with a healing potion instead of smashing it nearby, leading to a breach of their oath. Another recounted the unfortunate incident of unintentionally falling onto an NPC, causing their untimely demise and breaking their paladin oath.

Perhaps the most intriguing tale involved a player who claimed to have broken their oath by doing nothing at all. They were accused of siding with Wulbren and massacring the Gondians, despite having taken no such action. It appears that the gods of Faerun and Larian Studios have a penchant for spiteful twists, regardless of the player’s intentions.

Baldur’s Gate 3 offers players a range of paladin oaths, each with unique spells, stats, and playstyles. For those inclined towards mischief, there is even the option to become an Oathbreaker, a paladin who has forsaken their vows and strayed from the path. The consequences of oathbreaking vary depending on which oath was broken, whether intentionally or accidentally.

The game’s dynamic world and multitude of choices have garnered praise, earning Baldur’s Gate 3 the Golden Joysticks Award for Best Storytelling. With countless possibilities and unexpected outcomes, players continue to share their diverse experiences in the ever-evolving realm of Faerun.
