Players Demand an End to Minecraft’s Annual Mob Vote

Derek Morgan

The Minecraft community is calling for an official end to the annual mob vote, a popular event where players can vote for the next mob to be added to the game. A petition titled #StopTheMobVote has gained over 290,000 signatures, expressing frustration with the system.

One of the main reasons players want to end the mob vote is that they feel great ideas are being discarded. Currently, three potential mobs are presented, and only one is chosen to be added to the game in a future update. However, none of the losing contenders have ever been released, leading players to doubt Mojang’s claims that these ideas are still considered.

The movement behind #StopTheMobVote aims to “put an end to the scrapping of great ideas.” Players argue that the mob vote generates division within the community and leaves promising content unused.

The voting system creates division among players as they prioritize different aspects when choosing their favorite mob. Some focus on aesthetics, while others consider gameplay potential. This often leads to disappointment for a majority of players.

Many players still lament the loss of mobs from previous votes, such as the Moobloom, which lost to the Glow Squid in the 2020 vote. The lack of new content in Minecraft further fuels the demand for all three mobs to be added instead of just one.

The #StopTheMobVote petition argues that players only see minimal content added to the game they love and feel frustrated when promising additions are taken away.

The 2023 mob vote is currently underway, featuring the crab, armadillo, and penguin as contenders. However, the growing support for the #StopTheMobVote movement may prompt a response from Mojang.
