During BlizzCon 2023, Blizzard unveiled a new playable allied race called Earthen Dwarves for their upcoming expansion, The War Within. However, WoW players expressed their disappointment on Blizzard’s forums and Reddit, criticizing the new race as “extremely underwhelming.”
Blizzard announced three new expansions for WoW, with The War Within being the first. This expansion will introduce new dungeons, zones, and game mechanics. Alongside these updates, Blizzard also revealed the addition of a new playable allied race. Unfortunately, players were not impressed that the first new race would be yet another variation of Dwarves.
One player took to the forums to voice their dissatisfaction with the Earthen Dwarves. They stated, “After having some time to process the new announcements, I must say that The War Within expansion missed the mark with the Earthen Dwarves. While I appreciate the bold move of announcing three expansions in a saga, this upcoming expansion seems to be the weakest of the three. Earthen Dwarves… Who thought this was a good idea? No one has ever requested this race before. It will now be the third Dwarf variant in the game. It’s incredibly lackluster. Dwarves for the Horde? I’ll pass, Blizzard.”
Dwarves have been a playable race in WoW since its launch in 2004, and Dark Iron Dwarves were added as an allied playable race in 2018. With two existing dwarven races already available, players were hoping for something entirely different in terms of a new playable race.
The most recent addition to the playable races in WoW was the Dracthyr, a humanoid dragon race introduced in the Dragonflight expansion. Unlike other races, the Dracthyr starts at level 60 and can only play as the Evoker class. They have the option to join either the Horde or the Alliance factions.
Since the release of Legion in 2016, Blizzard has been introducing playable allied races to WoW. However, apart from the Vulpera race, all other allied races are variations of existing races in the game. Players often share their desires for new races, and Blizzard has fulfilled some of those wishes in the past, such as adding Goblins in Cataclysm in 2010.
The War Within expansion is set to be released before December 31, 2024. Blizzard has already provided substantial information about this upcoming expansion. Players eagerly await WoW Midnight to see if another more intriguing playable race will be introduced, surpassing the underwhelming reception of the Earthen Dwarves.
