Sony’s new handheld gaming device, the PlayStation Portal, has already sold out, and scalpers are taking advantage of the high demand. Within a day of its launch in several regions, including the US and UK, the PlayStation Portal is being resold online at significantly higher prices than its retail value. While Sony sells the device for $200, online listings on platforms like eBay have it listed for over $300, marking a 50% increase. This surge in scalped units is expected to be sold internationally, especially to countries like Australia, where the device won’t be available until February 2024.
Although the UK PlayStation Direct store announced that it has sold out, more stock is expected to be available on November 22. However, until then, consumers will likely encounter overpriced units online. While measures can be taken to limit scalping, it is difficult to completely eradicate the practice. Valve, the maker of the Steam Deck, has implemented new measures to combat scalping, but it remains an ongoing issue.
Despite the temptation, it is advisable to avoid supporting scalpers whenever possible. As Sony retailers continue to build up their PlayStation Portal supplies, it is anticipated that more reasonably priced units will become available.
