Pokémon enthusiasts have sparked a lively discussion on Reddit about certain Pokémon that need more appropriate abilities based on their Pokédex descriptions. This has raised questions about Game Freak’s internal process and whether they intentionally disregard their own lore.
The original Reddit thread, posted on October 15th, presents a compelling case for Luxray. The user, Mx_Toniy_4869, points out that every single Pokédex entry for Luxray describes its ability to see through walls. This consistent reference to X-ray vision in Luxray’s entries makes its current ability, Rivalry, seem inadequate. Rivalry boosts a Pokémon’s attack power by 25% when battling a Pokémon of the same gender but weakens it when facing the opposite gender. This inconsistency makes Luxray unreliable in battles.
Mx_Toniy suggests that Luxray should have the ability Frisk instead, which aligns with its X-ray vision theme. Frisk allows the user to see the held item of an opponent’s Pokémon at the start of a battle. This recommendation has gained support from other fans.
Another popular suggestion comes from Lyceus_, who highlights the Magnemite evolutionary line. Despite being Electric/Steel types, these Pokémon do not possess the Levitate ability, which would make them immune to Ground-type moves. Levitate is highly valued in competitive play. Gamengine proposes a theory that the electromagnetism used by Magnemite and its evolutions disrupts the ground beneath them, explaining why they don’t have Levitate. However, it still seems like Levitate would be a fitting ability for them.
Thegayestweeb suggests that Grimer and Muk should have the Liquid Ooze ability. This ability causes HP-draining moves to damage the user instead of healing them. Considering that Grimer and Muk are toxic sludge creatures that can kill plants and trees on contact, it makes sense that draining their fluids would harm the user.
These suggestions highlight the need for Game Freak to revisit their older Pokémon and assign more abilities that align with their lore. With a vast roster of Pokémon to choose from, it’s an opportunity to enhance the gameplay experience and make abilities more consistent with their respective Pokémon’s characteristics.
