Pokémon Go players are growing increasingly frustrated with Niantic’s implementation of a bothersome type of Field Research task that involves scanning an area for augmented reality mapping. These tasks, known as AR Mapping tasks, require players to walk around and use their phone’s camera to scan the surroundings for 20 seconds. However, players find these tasks awkward and uncomfortable, especially when they are in certain locations like schools and playgrounds. While the concept is interesting, players are urging Niantic to stop forcing these tasks upon them.
In a Reddit thread on September 24th, one player expressed their displeasure, stating, “I wish Niantic would stop asking me to walk around recording a children’s playground.” Another player echoed this sentiment, refusing to participate in these tasks, particularly because nearby PokéStops are often located in playgrounds and public parks. A third player found themselves in a similar situation, with their main PokéStop situated right next to a kindergarten.
Due to these concerns, players are requesting research tasks that they feel more comfortable with. Some attempt to avoid problems by scanning areas when they are empty or away from their community. However, many players simply wish they didn’t have to complete these tasks at all.
What frustrates players even more is that the AR Mapping tasks seem to appear even for those who have disabled the AR Mapping feature and actively avoid scanning PokéStops.
This isn’t the only issue surrounding AR Scanning and PokéStops that has recently come to light. Some players claim to have faced trouble when submitting new PokéStops because they did not meet Niantic’s standards. Meanwhile, questionable submissions with inappropriate descriptions are being approved.
AR Mapping and its associated features initially raised eyebrows when introduced in October 2020. Three years have passed since then, and public sentiment remains largely negative towards this feature. It appears that there are more problems with it than ever before, and it is up to Niantic to address these concerns.
