Preventing Pre-Round Distractions: The Dilemma of Skins in VALORANT

Tim Price

If you’re a fan of playing sentinels like Killjoy or Cypher in VALORANT, you probably have a routine for setting up your utility before each round. However, there’s a common pet peeve that can disrupt this setup process—teammates asking for your fancy skins. While it may seem harmless, this simple request can actually cause significant delays for certain agents, impacting their ability to prepare their utility within the limited time available.

For instance, Killjoy relies on placing her Turret, Alarmbot, and two Nanoswarms at strategic locations on the map. If someone asks her to drop her skin, she would have to spend time on this exchange, ensuring her teammate buys her another gun and transferring the skin to them. This distraction can prevent the German inventor from having all her utility ready when the round begins, particularly on defense. If the enemy team rushes her site and she hasn’t activated her gadgets, she’ll be at a disadvantage in stopping them from taking control.

In some cases, these pre-round setups may require agents to quickly move between different sites to deploy their utility. Take Viper on Icebox, for example. On defense, she might want to set up her Toxic Screen wall on A site and use her Poison Cloud orb as a one-way smoke on B. With limited time to move between sites, being asked for a skin only slows down the process further.

If you genuinely need a skin from your Viper or sentinel teammate, here’s some advice: trade at the end of the round if both of you are still alive, or ask ahead of time and make the exchange quickly before the other player starts setting up.

On the flip side, if you’re the one being asked for a skin, you can simply drop the gun wherever you are. There’s no need to personally deliver it to your teammate—they can come to you if they’re desperate for the skin. Your priority should be setting up your utility as soon as possible.
