The highly anticipated Pro Kompetition tournament series is making a comeback, offering a total prize pool of $255,000. NetherRealm Studios, in collaboration with Warner Bros. Games and RTS, has confirmed the return of this prestigious event. However, the announcement has left many prospective challengers feeling disappointed due to its last-minute nature and lack of information.
The MK1 Pro Kompetition will bring together 20 of the world’s best players in June for the Final Kombat World Championship. This will be the first NRS title event since Final Kombat 2020. The competition will kick off at East Coast Throwdown on October 20, giving players just three days to register and make travel arrangements to Connecticut. Fortunately, the registration date for MK1 has been extended until October 13 at 11:59pm ET.
In addition to East Coast Throwdown, there will be three other in-person Pro Kompetition events leading up to the Final Kombat in June 2024. These include Ultimate Fighting Arena in Paris on November 24, Comic Con Experience in São Paulo on November 30, and Combo Breaker 2024 in Chicago next spring.
For spots that are not decided through these LAN events, MK1’s regional programs will come into play. Players from the North American League, Interkontinental Kombat, and Liga Latina will compete in online qualifier events and Regional Finals to secure their spots in the tournament.
Final Kombat will also feature a last chance qualifier, where up to 256 players can participate in an open bracket. The main event will have a new format with a group stage.
While the inclusion of online events in the tournament series is common in the fighting game community, some players have expressed concerns about MK1’s performance issues. These include the lack of crossplay functionality and a game-breaking bug that gives player one an advantage. NRS has addressed the latter issue through a patch. However, players are worried about how online events will handle potential connection issues and ensure fair gameplay.
Furthermore, some players have voiced their disappointment with the $255,000 prize pool for the entire tournament series. They believe that Mortal Kombat, a game with a strong sales history, should have a larger prize pool compared to Street Fighter 6’s $2 million Capcom Pro Tour.
Despite these concerns, the majority of players are excited to see NRS and its partners fully committed to the MK competitive scene once again. The return of the Pro Kompetition promises to provide support for the game for years to come.
