Pro Player Climbs to Challenger with Off-Meta Picks

Derek Morgan

Isaac “Pekin Woof” Marconis, a former competitive LCS player and streamer, has achieved the impressive feat of reaching Challenger rank in League of Legends by exclusively playing off-meta champion picks. Despite the common stereotypes associated with off-meta choices, Pekin Woof’s unconventional strategies proved successful, leading to his climb up the ranked ladder.

Pekin Woof, known for his time on teams like FlyQuest Academy, primarily played off-meta picks in the mid lane, resulting in some surprising champion builds. In a recent AMA on Reddit, he shared his journey to Challenger and discussed the unique strategies he employed.

As someone who used to enjoy playing off-meta picks in ranked play, I found Pekin Woof’s approach intriguing. While my choices often lacked a logical path to success, such as Jungle Twisted Fate with full attack speed or Bard Jungle for unexpected flanks, Pekin Woof’s off-meta picks were backed by more strategic thinking and intelligence. This caught the attention of many fans on Reddit.

In the Reddit AMA, Pekin Woof was asked about the champions or builds he had never played before this climb. Some of his responses included full Lethality Poppy and full AP Nunu and Willump, both in the mid lane. While he didn’t provide specific build guides, attempting to replicate these picks may not yield the same level of success.

However, there is always a chance that the community discovers a hidden gem from Pekin Woof’s off-meta picks, which players can use to surprise their opponents and secure victories. Personally, I was delighted to see that he even experimented with Bard Mid, a champion I have a fondness for, and achieved some success with it. This only increased my admiration for his unconventional playstyle.

Pekin Woof has already reached Challenger by exploring various off-meta picks in unexpected roles, such as AP Kog’Maw or Warwick Mid. Whether you aspire to climb to Challenger or simply enjoy playing with friends, his climb teaches us an important lesson: you don’t have to conform to the meta to win, and sometimes, embracing unconventional strategies can make the game more enjoyable.
