Quest Design in Baldur’s Gate 3: A Breath of Fresh Air

Xavier Ward

Players are tired of boring fetch quests in games, but Baldur’s Gate 3 breaks the mold with its unique quest design. Unlike other games that rely on repetitive and meaningless tasks, Baldur’s Gate 3 offers quests that add depth and excitement to the overall experience. It’s time for developers to take note and move away from these filler quests.

One Reddit user recently praised the quest design in Baldur’s Gate 3, highlighting how each quest is distinct and contributes something meaningful to the game. They expressed their frustration with the prevalence of fetch quests in other games and applauded Baldur’s Gate 3 for avoiding this tired trope.

Many players agreed with this sentiment and pointed to the Dribbles the Clown quest as an example. While technically a fetch quest, it stands out due to the effort put into its development. Unique dialogue for every companion when collecting parts adds depth and immersion to the quest.

Filler quests are often included in games because they are easy to develop and artificially inflate playtime. However, they fail to engage players and can feel like a chore. Games like Assassin’s Creed Origins, Cyberpunk 2077, and Marvel’s Spider-Man all suffer from these types of quests, leaving players feeling disconnected and uninvested.

While fetch quests may not disappear entirely, it is encouraging to see developers recognize their shortcomings and focus on creating more meaningful and engaging content. By prioritizing quality over quantity, games can provide a more immersive and enjoyable experience for players.
