Players in Apex Legends season 19 have quickly discovered an exploit in the new respawn system that allows them to duplicate armors. Respawn, the game’s developer, is already aware of the issue and actively working on a solution.
In a social media post, Respawn producer Josh Medina acknowledged the problem and asked for player feedback on the new season. He specifically mentioned that the team was investigating intentional deaths for loot duplication.
The new respawn system introduced in season 19 provides respawning players with more loot than before. Previously, players would only respawn with a white body shield and minimal healing items. Now, they come back with the same level of shield they had when they died, along with their weapons (without attachments) and some ammo.
While the intention behind this change was to give respawning players a better chance at defending themselves and discourage certain strategies, it has been exploited by players who are far away from other teams on the map. These players intentionally kill themselves while wearing high-level body shields, allowing their teammates to loot their old armor from their death box when they respawn.
By combining this strategy with a Replicator, a team can use their crafting materials to craft one player’s armor to the maximum red tier. By repeating the respawn exploit, the entire team can end up with red armors.
Although this exploit may not be as severe as some past exploits in the game, it still provides a significant advantage to those who abuse it. Respawn is aware of the impact this has on the game’s balance, especially in higher levels of play and esports where skill levels are closely matched.
It is unlikely that the new respawn mechanic will be completely reverted. Instead, Respawn is likely working on a fix that involves the respawning player’s armor consuming the old body shield in their death box or implementing a system that prevents players from regaining their previous level of shield if they died intentionally.
Ultimately, Respawn needs to remove the option for players to abuse this game mechanic in order to restore balance. The history of Apex Legends has shown that players will exploit any advantage they can find, which can negatively impact the overall health of the game.
While a solution is being worked on, it is important to note that the new respawn system was not intended to be exploited in this manner. Respawn’s prompt response to address the issue is beneficial for both the player community and the game’s esports scene, particularly with the ALGS offseason currently underway.
It is expected that Respawn will find a resolution that addresses the exploit without completely undoing the positive aspects of the new respawn system. By doing so, they can ensure a fair and balanced gameplay experience for all players.
