Review: Detective Pikachu Returns

superadmin

A Mixed Bag of Coffee Beans

Detective Pikachu Returns had the potential to be a great follow-up to one of the last big 3DS titles. However, it falls short of expectations and leaves a mixed taste in the mouths of Pokémon fans. Despite the success of the Pokémon franchise’s first live-action film and its release on the Nintendo Switch, the game fails to deliver a satisfying experience.

A Simplified Approach to Sleuthing

Compared to the original Detective Pikachu, the sequel streamlines the gameplay, but not necessarily for the better. The puzzles are well-designed but simplified, removing some of the more challenging elements from the first game. Instead, players spend more time wandering around, interviewing characters and Pokémon for information that is often already obvious. This approach may appeal to younger players and Pikachu enthusiasts, but it can be frustrating for those seeking a more engaging experience. The gameplay loop becomes repetitive after the second chapter, with only a few standout moments, such as the Luxray stealth missions.

One major disappointment is the lack of meaningful side quests. Completing these quests offers little reward or incentive, making them feel like a waste of time. Additionally, there is no post-game content, as loading the save file after completing the game simply takes players back to the final scene.

Get Ready to Go Camping with Tim and Pikachu

Detective Pikachu Returns does not take itself too seriously, offering a straightforward and campy mystery story. While some plot twists may be predictable for those familiar with the original game or movie, the game surprises with an Avengers-style team-up and a high-stakes raid. The story touches on darker themes such as death, divorce, and corruption within law enforcement, adding depth to an otherwise lighthearted adventure. The game also ties up loose ends from the Goodman family’s story and acknowledges the live-action film, making Ryan Reynolds’ portrayal of Pikachu part of Pokémon canon.

However, the non-Pokémon characters in the game lack depth and development. While Tim, Harry, and a certain unnamed character provide enjoyable performances, the rest of the human cast is hit or miss.

Visuals That Needed a Smeargle’s Touch

The game’s visuals are a letdown, particularly when it comes to the human characters. The 3D models lack detail and are bland, with limited animations that are reused throughout the game. The lack of environmental lighting further detracts from the overall visual experience. In contrast, the Pokémon models are generally fine, though not consistently impressive.

The game’s art direction is especially disappointing when considering the high-quality portraits of the human characters used in dialogue boxes and the Detective Notebook. These assets showcase shading and detail, leaving players wondering why the game did not utilize them more extensively. The stiff presentation of voice acting in non-key cutscenes exacerbates the issue, making the overall visual and audio experience underwhelming.

An Unfortunate End to a Pokémon Caper

Despite its charm, Detective Pikachu Returns falls short due to its poor presentation and hand-holding approach. While it may appeal to younger Pokémon fans or those playing with friends, it lacks the depth and engagement that older players may seek. The game had the potential to be great, but ultimately fails to deliver on its promise.

I cannot recommend this title to anyone who is not a die-hard Pokémon fan or looking for a casual gaming experience. Detective Pikachu Returns had the opportunity to be something special, but it ultimately falls flat.
