Riot Designer Apologizes for Champion Designs

Derek Morgan

Riot Games’ champion designs in League of Legends have often been a topic of debate among players, with accusations of power creep surrounding new releases. One of Riot’s prominent champion designers, August, has publicly apologized for the designs of Zeri and Gnar, considering them his biggest failures as a designer.

August admitted his mistake with Zeri, acknowledging that he could have done better to make her more playable. However, he also mentioned that Riot intentionally avoids buffing Zeri due to concerns about her presence in professional play. Buffing her without careful consideration could lead to an imbalance in her performance.

Another regret expressed by August is Gnar, who has become a popular pick in professional play due to his ability to dominate the top lane and provide strong crowd control. August believes that Gnar’s visual design caters more to casual players, but his kit’s unreliability makes him challenging for less skilled players to handle. Any attempt to buff Gnar’s base kit could potentially disrupt the game at higher levels of play.

While both Zeri and Gnar have caused frustration among players since their release, August’s apology resonated with the community, reminding them that there are real people behind the development of the game. It serves as a reminder that developers share the same love for games as the players and strive to create enjoyable experiences.
