Riot Games has decided to backtrack on its plan to charge players $10 for name changes after receiving backlash from both VALORANT and League of Legends players. The company had originally announced updates to the name change system, coinciding with the retirement of Summoner Names in League and the introduction of Riot IDs. However, players were unhappy with the proposed changes, which would have required them to wait 365 days and pay a fee to change their names.
In response to player feedback and internal discussions, Riot Games has made some revisions to the planned update. When the new system goes live on November 20, players will be able to change their Riot ID at no cost, and the waiting period will be reduced from 365 days to 90 days.
The initial intention behind the changes was to encourage players to think twice before changing their names. Previously, League players could change their Summoner Names using Blue Essence or RP without any waiting period, while VALORANT players had to wait 30 days to change their Riot ID but could do so for free.
Under the revised system, VALORANT players will still need to wait 90 days to change their Riot ID, but this is a significant improvement from the originally planned 365-day waiting period. League players, on the other hand, will no longer have to spend Blue Essence or RP to change their names, but they will have to adhere to the 90-day waiting period.
Regardless of their previous name change history, all players will have the opportunity to make an immediate Riot ID name change when the new system launches on November 20.
Overall, Riot Games’ decision to reverse the name change charges demonstrates their willingness to listen to player feedback and make adjustments accordingly.
