Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio Confident in Exploring New Genres for Yakuza/Like a Dragon Games

Derek Morgan

Hiroyuki Sakamoto, the chief producer of the Yakuza/Like a Dragon games at Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, believes that the studio can create enjoyable games in genres it has no experience with due to its focus on narrative. In a recent interview with Game Informer, Sakamoto discussed how the studio is balancing the real-time beat ’em up and turn-based RPG genres in the Yakuza/Like a Dragon series.

Sakamoto explained that the studio is not concerned with maintaining a balance between the two genres, but rather focuses on making each game interesting in its own way. The narrative takes precedence in determining the combat style, as RGG Studio’s games are primarily narrative-driven. Sakamoto stated, “We always think about the most enjoyable form of that narrative, which combat factors into.”

Furthermore, Sakamoto expressed confidence in the studio’s ability to create enjoyable games in new genres, citing their experience in developing various styles of minigames. He stated, “We are confident that we can make an enjoyable game, even if it is in a genre we have never made before.”

While there are no confirmed projects beyond the upcoming Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, there is speculation that the Yakuza/Like a Dragon series may undergo genre shifts or explore new spin-offs. RGG Studio has already experimented with different genres within the games through various minigames that deviate from the core gameplay. For example, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth features a Crazy Taxi-inspired minigame and an Animal Crossing-esque life simulation.

The possibilities for future genres within the series are vast, including expanding the karaoke rhythm minigame into a full rhythm action game or creating a traditional fighting game or party game. The future of the series remains uncertain, but fans can anticipate exciting developments from RGG Studio.
