With the upcoming release of The Indigo Disk DLC in winter, Scarlet and Violet players are eagerly anticipating the return of certain Pokémon, now empowered by the Tera Type mechanic in Gen IX.
Tera Types have proven to be a game-changer in competitive play, offering various benefits to Pokémon under the right circumstances. Whether it’s boosting damage output or transforming defensive weaknesses into resistances or immunities, Tera Types can give any Pokémon a significant advantage in battle.
One group of Pokémon that stands to benefit greatly from this mechanic are those with unfavorable typings, often due to quad-weaknesses. For instance, Aggron, a Steel/Rock Pokémon from Gen III, suffers from a four times weakness to both Fighting and Ground-type attacks. However, if Aggron were to make a comeback in The Indigo Disk, it could utilize Tera Types like other Pokémon in Gen IX.
By adopting the Flying Tera Type, Aggron could resist Fighting moves and become completely immune to Ground attacks. This would eliminate all of its quad-weaknesses, transforming Aggron into a formidable physical tank with its impressive Defense stat of 180. Such a buff would be a game-changer for Pokémon like Aggron that are hindered by their quad-weaknesses.
Other dual Rock Pokémon, including Rhyperior, Bastiodon, and Aurorus, also suffer from multiple quad-weaknesses and would greatly benefit from being added to the Gen IX games and given the opportunity to Terastallize.
We have already witnessed the success of Tera Types in competitive VGC with Pokémon like Kingambit, a popular Dark-type Pokémon. Despite its four times weakness to Fighting moves as a Dark/Steel type, Kingambit can overcome this vulnerability by adopting the Tera Fire Type, which not only removes its Fighting weakness but also protects it from debilitating burns.
Another success story is Tyranitar, a pseudo-legendary Pokémon from Gen II. Like Kingambit, Tyranitar is quad-weak to Fighting. However, by utilizing the Flying Tera Type, this Rock/Dark Pokémon can easily circumvent its Fighting and Ground weaknesses, making it a formidable force in battles.
These success stories give hope to Pokémon like Aggron, deserving of a much-needed buff. However, their fate ultimately lies in whether they will be included in The Indigo Disk DLC when it releases in winter.
