Shiny Pokémon Hunting: How Pokémon Go Has Changed the Game

Tim Price

Shiny Pokémon Hunting Made Easier by Pokémon Go

Pokémon game developers have significantly simplified their games over the years, and this has had a major impact on the shiny hunting experience. In the past, catching a shiny Pokémon was a challenging and time-consuming task that could take hours, days, or even months to accomplish. However, with the introduction of Pokémon Go and other in-game tools, the process has been completely transformed.

The Devaluation of Shiny Pokémon Hunting

The value of shiny Pokémon has been called into question recently, particularly after a post by creator HoodlumCallum on social media. They argued that the abundance of shiny Pokémon available in Pokémon Go has diminished the significance of shiny hunting in the main games. It’s hard to argue against this point.

Why would anyone spend countless hours searching for a shiny Lapras in the main games when they can easily catch multiple shiny Pokémon during a Pokémon Go spotlight hour? With the convenience of Pokémon Home, transferring these shinies to your Pokémon Scarlet and Violet saves is a breeze.

The Ease of Obtaining Shiny Pokémon

Obtaining shiny Pokémon has become incredibly easy in the series. Fellow creator Aero also points out that items like the Shiny Charm have further decreased the value of shinies in the mainline games. While not as extreme as Pokémon Go, using these items significantly speeds up the process for players. However, players can choose not to use these items if they prefer a more challenging experience.

Looking at the odds from each generation, it becomes clear that Pokémon Go presents a significant problem. In Generation II, the chances of encountering a shiny Pokémon in the wild were 1 in 8192. These odds have increased with each generation, but it is Pokémon Go that takes it to another level.

In Pokémon Go, the base rate for encountering a shiny Pokémon is around 0.2 percent, which can increase to as high as 10 percent during events. This drastic difference in odds makes Pokémon Go the obvious choice for shiny farming if that is your primary goal.

The Future of Shiny Pokémon Hunting

Whether or not you believe that making shiny Pokémon more accessible is a positive thing, there is no denying that it has become easier over time. With Pokémon Go still in the mix, it is unlikely that shiny hunting will return to its original difficulty anytime soon. However, long-time Pokémon players can still cherish the memories of grinding for that elusive shiny Charmander the old-fashioned way.
