Ship Bug in Starfield Leaves Players Stranded at Space Stations

Tim Price

Imagine being stranded at a space station in Starfield because your starship decides to fly off without you and attack your allied factions. That’s exactly what happened to one player who encountered a hilarious bug in the game.

The player had docked at The Eye to refuel and resupply, but as they entered the airlock, their ship detached itself and started firing at a nearby United Colonies vessel. This left the player confused and stranded at the space station.

Other players jokingly suggested that the ship’s AI had become sentient and decided to eliminate all human life, referencing famous works like I, Robot and 2001: A Space Odyssey.

It turns out that there is a bug when players commandeer a Spacer or pirate ship. The ship retains its “enemy” status and automatically engages with allied factions, regardless of its new owner.

Another player mentioned that they had stripped down a pirate ship and rebuilt it, only to have it take off on its own and attack the United Colonies and Constellation factions, following its original programming. It seems that NPC ships return to their default behavior when not actively flown, despite being reassigned to a new owner.

The original poster found a fix by leaving the captain’s chair mid-flight. This caused the ship to start flying and attacking nearby ships. By removing and adding a random structure or part to the ship’s interior or exterior, they were able to reset the ship and regain control.

However, it can be frustrating to know that you can’t leave the helm for even a moment without your ship going on a rampage. Hopefully, Bethesda will address this bug soon, or the United Colonies might need to upgrade their anti-air combat capabilities.
