Sombra’s Rework in Overwatch 2 Season 7: A New Playstyle for Sombra Mains

Tim Price

Overwatch 2 Season 7 is just around the corner, and with it comes the highly anticipated rework of Sombra. Streamer and Toronto Defiant creator, KarQ, had the opportunity to playtest the new Sombra and shared his insights on the changes that will affect players. The key takeaway is that Sombra mains will need to be more committed to finishing their fights than ever before.

One of the major changes to Sombra is her revamped Translocator, which KarQ describes as a “massive, massive change.” Previously, Sombra could teleport back to safety, but now she must throw the Translocator mid-fight and teleport to its landing spot. This means that dealing with an enemy Sombra after she initiates a fight will be easier, as she will have to commit to her position. On the flip side, players will also need to commit to eliminating Sombra once she appears.

KarQ also highlights that the Translocator will teleport after traveling a certain distance or colliding with any object or wall. This requires precise aim when throwing it, as mistiming can result in getting caught off-guard and shot in the back.

According to KarQ, this rework will particularly benefit lower-ranked Sombras by encouraging them to engage in fights, deal damage, and charge their EMP faster to have a greater impact on the game. The new Virus ability complements this playstyle perfectly and can make Sombra a formidable force in the right hands.

Another significant change is Sombra’s passive ability. The previous Opportunist, which allowed players to see low-health enemies through walls, will be replaced with Stealth. Instead of wall-hacks, Sombra will become invisible and move faster when out of combat. This adjustment makes Sombra less frustrating to play against, as players can catch her off-guard by waiting until the combat is over before entering Stealth.

While many Overwatch 2 players are excited about the rework, there is still skepticism regarding Sombra’s damage potential. KarQ mentions that Blizzard made some number tweaks after the playtest, but the true power of Sombra will only be revealed once Season 7 launches on October 10.
