Splatoon 3 has recently announced the upcoming Chill Season, which will bring a wave of exciting new content including weapons, maps, cosmetics, and more for the winter season. However, the community has been particularly intrigued by one special weapon that shares similarities with another popular shooter.
The Splatoon North America account has been teasing the release of Chill Season, scheduled for December 1st, by sharing information about new weapons and kits. One of the latest teasers introduces the Splattercolor Screen, a special weapon that is set to make its debut in the game.
The Splattercolor Screen is a thrown special weapon, similar to the Ink Storm or Triple Inkstrike. When it lands, it instantly creates a long wall in the player’s color, which obstructs vision for both teams. Any enemy player who passes through the wall will experience a significant slowdown and temporarily lose the ability to see colors, as shown in the Chill Season announcement trailer.
While some players may find this concept familiar, as other popular shooters like Apex Legends have abilities with similar effects, the Splattercolor Screen and Catalyst’s Dark Veil from Apex Legends are not exact copies. They share similarities such as providing cover for their team, allowing projectiles to pass through, and negatively affecting enemies who pass through the walls. However, there are also key differences between the two abilities.
One notable difference is that the Splattercolor Screen can be thrown, but it has translucent gaps that allow enemies to peek through. On the other hand, Catalyst’s Dark Veil must be manually placed at her feet and is completely solid throughout. Additionally, Dark Veil blinds enemies who pass directly through the wall and blocks scanning abilities, while the Splattercolor Screen does not stop certain tracking abilities.
Although the Splattercolor Screen has not been featured in any upcoming weapon kits yet, it is expected to be revealed in the daily updates leading up to the launch of Chill Season on December 1st.
Excited fans can already enjoy the pre-season content, including the new Tournament Manager that is currently live and features Nintendo’s latest guidelines. Additionally, there is an upcoming Splatfest themed around the best go-to greeting, which will take place from November 17th to November 19th.
