Square Enix game director and producer Naoki Yoshida expressed his desire for a collaboration between Final Fantasy XIV and Diablo during a press conference at the London Fan Festival. However, he revealed that there were certain compatibility issues that prevented this crossover from happening.
Yoshida, a fan of the Diablo franchise, explained that the dark and mature world of Diablo would not seamlessly fit into Final Fantasy XIV due to the game’s age rating restriction. While Final Fantasy XIV is rated for players aged 13 and above, Diablo 4 carries a Mature rating, restricting it to players aged 17 and above.
Although Yoshida could have made changes to accommodate the collaboration, he was concerned that players would be disappointed if the true spirit of Diablo was not captured in the Final Fantasy XIV crossover event. He wanted to ensure that the collaboration felt faithful to the Diablo franchise.
Despite the compatibility issues with Diablo, Yoshida expressed his enthusiasm for collaborations with other games, believing that they would bring new life to the industry. He stated that he was open to taking on various challenges in the future.
Final Fantasy XIV has already demonstrated its ability to hold unique collaboration events, such as the upcoming crossover with Fall Guys. The game has also featured collaborations with licenses that have higher age ratings than Final Fantasy XIV, such as NieR: Automata.
In addition to discussing the Diablo collaboration, Yoshida mentioned that preparations were underway to bring back the Yokai-Watch collaboration event. He also hinted at the possibility of Final Fantasy XV returning to the game based on player feedback.
Overall, while a Diablo collaboration may not be feasible at the moment, Final Fantasy XIV continues to explore exciting partnerships and collaborations to enhance the gaming experience for its players.
