Starfield Considered Using Fallout’s Earth, but Decided Against It

superadmin

Bethesda’s creative director, Todd Howard, has revealed that the idea of using Fallout’s post-apocalyptic Earth in their upcoming game, Starfield, was seriously considered. However, after careful consideration, the decision was made to create a separate version of Earth for Starfield.

In the final version of Starfield, players will be able to explore the ruins of iconic buildings like The Shard in London and the Pyramids of Giza in Cairo. But the potential for even more discoveries and the implications behind them were much greater in earlier stages of game development.

When asked if Starfield’s Earth would have been the same wasteland as Fallout’s, Howard admitted that the team had discussed it. This revelation sparks excitement and speculation about the possibility of revisiting familiar locations from the Fallout series and uncovering Easter eggs along the way.

However, there were several reasons why this idea was ultimately abandoned. One major obstacle was the timeline. Starfield takes place only 40 years after the events of Fallout 4, and the trajectories of humanity in both games are incompatible. While the Zetan race could have provided a workaround, it would have been a stretch to justify the merging of these two distinct worlds.

Another factor was the production cycle of Starfield, which was already complex and lengthy. Finding justifications and integrating the landmarks and lore of Fallout would have been challenging. The prolonged development of Starfield, further extended by the COVID-19 pandemic, made it more practical to focus solely on creating a unique Earth for the game.

In the end, the decision to keep Fallout separate from Starfield was the right one. It allowed the team to fully explore and develop the world of Starfield without the constraints and complications of incorporating another beloved franchise.
