Starfield Lead Quest Designer Leaves Bethesda for Something Wicked Games

Tim Price

Players react with indifference to the departure of Starfield’s lead quest designer, William Shen, from Bethesda to Something Wicked Games. Many believe that his exit will not bring about significant improvements. Despite Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard, players on Reddit are skeptical that anything will change as Emil Pagliarulo remains the studio design director at Bethesda. Speculation suggests that disagreements over in-game content may have contributed to Shen’s departure.

Complaints about a conservative approach to quest design for new releases, particularly main quests, are prevalent among gamers. Previous Bethesda releases, such as Skyrim and Fallout, were praised for their creative freedom in side quests. Some players commend Shen’s work on the Fallout 4 Far Harbor DLC. However, there is a growing pessimism among gamers regarding the direction Bethesda has taken with recent releases, with Starfield being considered their weakest release. A change in direction for the studio does not appear to be imminent.

Shen has joined Something Wicked Games as a lead content designer for their upcoming open-world game, Wyrdsong, set in medieval Portugal. Limited information is available about the game at this time.

It is hoped that Bethesda will undergo some form of change, either in their approach or the decision-makers involved. With a history of successful releases, it would be disappointing for such a prominent studio to opt for a safe path and deliver average games.
