Sakurai expressed his awe at the exceptional quality of Super Mario Bros. Wonder and Spider-Man 2, recommending them to everyone. However, he did mention his frustration with the simultaneous release of these two highly anticipated titles on Oct. 20. Despite this, Sakurai managed to conquer both games almost simultaneously, indicating a significant amount of time dedicated to gaming in the past week.
Spider-Man 2 offers around 15 hours of gameplay for the main story alone, with additional side content to explore. Wonder added another nine hours to Sakurai’s gaming experience. As a developer closely associated with Nintendo, Sakurai felt a stronger connection to Wonder, which perfectly embodies the accessibility and platforming excellence of the Super Mario Bros. franchise.
While Wonder resonates with Sakurai’s personal ties to Nintendo, Spider-Man 2 has garnered widespread acclaim since its release. The franchise consistently receives high praise, with no game falling below an 85 rating on Metacritic. Spider-Man 2 currently holds the highest rating in the series at 90, even surpassing the PC remaster of the original game. Insomniac’s latest installment is undoubtedly the pinnacle of the Spider-Man games.
Fans are already well aware of the success of both games, but when a developer like Sakurai, who has achieved immense success with two franchises, labels them as “masterpieces,” it’s hard to dispute. Although they offer distinct gameplay experiences, both Super Mario Bros. Wonder and Spider-Man 2 stand out as some of the best games of the year. They may even compete for the coveted Game of the Year title in the future, considering the impressive lineup of contenders.
