Masahiro Sakurai, the creator of the Super Smash Bros. series, believes that surpassing Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will be a challenging task for him and his team. In a recent video uploaded on YouTube, Sakurai discussed the development of Ultimate and briefly touched upon the future of the series. While he is not opposed to creating a new Smash Bros. game, he acknowledged the difficulty in further improving the formula established by Ultimate. It is worth noting that Sakurai has expressed similar sentiments during the development of previous Super Smash Bros. titles.
Sakurai also shared insights into the development process of Ultimate and the obstacles they encountered. One such challenge was fitting the game onto a 16 GB cartridge, which was significantly smaller than the Wii U’s disk used for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. Additionally, Sakurai mentioned the added difficulties posed by the COVID-19 pandemic but expressed pride in their ability to complete the game on time.
While the prospect of a new Super Smash Bros. game on Nintendo’s upcoming console is exciting, it is hard to envision a more comprehensive experience than Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The game’s title itself suggests that “Everyone is here,” encompassing an extensive roster of characters. Perhaps Nintendo could adopt a similar approach to Mario Kart 8, offering improved performance and additional features in a future iteration of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. While this is purely speculative, it seems unlikely that we have seen the last of Super Smash Bros.
