Riot Games is revolutionizing Teamfight Tactics with the Runeterra Reforged Set 9.5 Mid-Set update, bringing major changes to the item system. Game designer Stephen “Mortdog” Mortimer provided a sneak peek of these updates on Aug. 25.
The TFT Set 9.5 Mid-Set update marks the final one before Riot transitions to a new three-set per year structure starting with Set 10. With this new era on the horizon, Riot is taking a long-term approach to the game’s systems. Mortdog revealed that TFT will now have four types of items, aiming to make the item system more intuitive for players.
Item System Update for Horizonbound
In order to enhance players’ understanding of TFT’s item system, Riot has made significant changes to its structure. There are now four types of items, each with consistent rules for how they function. Let’s delve into the details!
Each of the four new item types—Core, Radiant, Artifact, and Support—has specific rules governing their effects. Mortdog assures players that these changes will maintain the depth and strategic decision-making that skilled players enjoy, while also making the system more accessible to newcomers.
The Core category has undergone the most alterations, introducing six new items. Core items are designed to empower the wearer and make them stronger. For example, the Night Harvester grants a 15% bonus damage boost, which increases to 30% when the wearer’s health falls below 60%.
Another exciting addition is the Adaptive Helm, which enhances the wearer’s stats based on their position on the board, taking inspiration from Augments.
Support items, on the other hand, do not directly strengthen the wearer. Aegis of the Legion, a new Support item, provides attack speed, armor, and magic resistance to all allies in the columns behind the holder for 10 seconds. Additionally, some Shimmerscale items have been reclassified as Artifacts.
Players will have the opportunity to test out the revamped item system when Set 9.5 launches on the PBE servers early next week. The Horizonbound set will officially be released on Sept. 13.
