The Decline of the ADC Role: Is it Useless Outside of Pro Play?

Xavier Ward

League of Legends players are questioning the relevance of the AD carry role in recent times. Many feel that the role has become ineffective and not worth the effort, especially in solo queue. This sentiment is echoed by ADC mains who believe that the role lacks damage, agency, utility, and safety compared to other roles.

Traditionally, AD carries were known for their consistent damage output and ability to carry games once they reached their power spikes. However, in the current meta, AD carries struggle to find protection and peel in solo queue, often dying before they can make a significant impact in teamfights.

On the other hand, AP carries in the bottom lane offer more durability, damage, and flexibility with defensive itemization. They can easily opt for items like Banshee’s Veil and Zhonya’s Hourglass, making them a more appealing choice than traditional marksmen.

In professional play, AD carries have a different experience as they receive constant support and farm from their team. Top laners fulfill their role as tanks and protect the AD carry during teamfights. However, in solo queue, AD carries are often under-leveled, lacking items, and unable to influence the outcome of the game.

Riot Games has made attempts to address the issues faced by AD carries, but these efforts have been overshadowed by subsequent nerfs to AD carry items. The promise of changes to Critical Strike in season 14 offers hope for the role’s improvement, but it may require a return to the game’s state before the Durability Patch to truly see the AD carry role shine again.

Overall, the decline of the ADC role outside of pro play raises concerns about its viability and impact in solo queue. Players are left questioning whether the effort put into playing AD carry is worth the reward, leading some to consider alternative roles or champions in the bottom lane.
