Embark Studios’ upcoming FPS game, THE FINALS, has already achieved remarkable success during its open beta test. Within just 10 days, the beta attracted a staggering 7.5 million players, setting the stage for its highly anticipated full release.
While an official release date has yet to be announced, the developers have acknowledged the need to address various issues identified during the beta phase before the game hits the shelves.
During the beta, THE FINALS reached a peak concurrent player count of 267,874, surpassing even Apex Legends at times and coming close to overtaking Baldur’s Gate 3, as reported by SteamDB.
The beta phase has now concluded, marking an unforgettable week for Embark Studios. The massive participation of 7.5 million contestants has provided invaluable feedback, enabling the developers to focus on fixing and improving the game based on the identified issues. The team expressed their gratitude and looks forward to the next opportunity to engage with players.
To ensure a smooth and polished release, Embark Studios has ample time to address the reported bugs and glitches encountered during the beta. These ranged from NSFW character models to overpowered weapons and equipment, with flamethrowers being a particular concern due to their excessive damage output.
However, the most significant challenge faced by THE FINALS was the prevalence of cheaters. Players consistently encountered cheating opponents, with the community pointing to China as the main source of the problem. In response to player feedback, the developers took action by banning cheaters but did not implement the desired ping restrictions during the beta period.
The overwhelming player count achieved during the beta phase also allows the developers to prepare their servers for the influx of players upon full release. This is crucial, as several game releases in 2023, such as Counter-Strike 2 and Payday 3, experienced server issues during their initial weeks due to inadequate preparation.
While it remains to be seen if THE FINALS will encounter similar challenges upon its full release, the developers now have valuable insights to mitigate potential issues. The official release date is expected to be announced before the end of 2023.
