The Frustrations of CS2’s Subtick System

Tim Price

Cooper “TruckLover86” Phelps, a popular American Counter-Strike player and streamer, recently experienced the frustrations of CS2’s subtick system. In a clip on Nuke, he showcased how the system can lead to incredibly frustrating and unfair gameplay.

TruckLover86’s impressive Ramp hold initially seemed like a clean kill. However, when the first shot was slowed down, it became evident that what players see on their screens is not always connected to the actual outcome. The bullet appeared to curve magically into his opponent’s head, resulting in a fraudulent kill. Despite this questionable kill, TruckLover managed to smoke the remaining two players, effectively ending the round.

The subtick system was introduced to replace the discrepancy between FACEIT’s 128-tick servers and CS:GO’s matchmaking 64-tick servers. Valve aimed to create a unified experience across all game modes and matches. Unfortunately, the current implementation of the system is far from perfect. Players of all skill levels have reported issues such as movement delay, dying behind cover, and shots that should have hit but missed entirely.

Valve rushed the release of CS2 during the summer, which likely contributed to the system’s flaws. While the LAN build for competitions may function properly, online players will have to endure the growing pains of the new system until it is improved to a satisfactory level.

Once fully operational, the subtick system has the potential to positively transform online Counter-Strike gameplay and unite the fractured community. However, until that point, players should expect frustrating deaths and questionable kills.
