The Worst Spell in Baldur’s Gate 3: Countercharm

Derek Morgan

A recent Reddit post sparked a discussion about the worst spell in Baldur’s Gate 3, and it seems that many players agree on one particular spell: Countercharm. This Bard action, available at level six, has been deemed by players as the most useless spell in the game.

Countercharm is meant to provide an advantage on saving throws against being charmed or frightened for you and your allies within a nine-meter radius. However, it only lasts for three turns and consumes your action points for a turn.

Unfortunately, the spell’s usefulness is limited as not many enemies in the game use charm or fear effects. This renders Countercharm ineffective in most situations, leading to frustration among players. While reloading a save can be a workaround, it does not solve the underlying issue.

The community agrees that Countercharm is weak and flawed in its design. Some players even compare it to its tabletop counterpart, stating that it is equally pointless in that context as well.

One proposed solution to improve the spell’s utility is to make it an automatic reaction, similar to Counterattack or Hellish Rebuke. This change would make Countercharm a more valuable asset for players. However, it is unlikely that any changes will be made to the spell in the near future.

Overall, Countercharm stands out as the worst spell in Baldur’s Gate 3, with its limited effectiveness and flawed design. Players hope for improvements or alternatives to make this spell more worthwhile in future updates.
