Tundra Esports Recruits Topson for TI 2023, but the Future Remains Uncertain

Xavier Ward

Tundra Esports surprised everyone by recruiting Topias “Topson” Taavitsainen just before The International 2023. However, questions arise about this unexpected alliance and its impact on the team. Will Topson’s stint with Tundra be short-lived or a long-term partnership? With the addition of Topson and Nine in a new role, has Tundra found its rhythm?

After winning The International 2022, Tundra Esports faced burnout issues, leading them to adopt unconventional approaches like allowing players to play from home during the DPC. This unique strategy paid off, and Tundra was expected to regain its position as a top contender after placing third at the Bali Major. However, the team faced setbacks when they had to move Saksa to the inactive roster, forcing Nine to adjust as Topson joined the team.

Nine shared the details of Tundra’s signing of Topson, revealing that he wasn’t their first choice. They initially considered Aui_2000, their coach, as a potential player due to his high value as a player. However, Dota 2 competitive rules limited their options as Aui_2000 had played in TI12 qualifiers and was qualified for TI. Fortunately, Topson expressed interest in playing with Tundra, saving them from having to make their coach play.

With OG’s approval, Topson joined Tundra, bringing his two-time TI-winning experience to the team. This addition meant that Tundra had two mid laners, resulting in Nine sacrificing his position to become a position four player. Despite the challenges, Nine received support from Aui_2000 and Saksa, who coached him during the transition.

While Nine found the role change overwhelming at times, he described the process as refreshing and enjoyed learning something new in Dota 2. Tundra managed to maintain its core identity despite the roster changes, as Topson’s style aligns with Nine’s in the mid lane. Nine continues to adapt to his new role, becoming more comfortable as he gains experience.

As Tundra prepares for TI 2023, the team’s future remains uncertain. There are no long-term plans in place, and the focus is solely on the upcoming tournament. Whether Topson will stay with Tundra after TI 2023 is unknown, and the team is prepared for any outcome. They may welcome back Saksa or explore other player options if needed.
