Twitch has unveiled a new feature aimed at enhancing streamer safety and control over their virtual space. This update, a direct response to community feedback, allows streamers to block banned viewers from accessing their live broadcasts.
The option can be found in the moderation settings on each streamer’s creator dashboard. By activating the “Stop banned users from viewing streams” checkbox, streamers can prevent any viewers who have been banned from their channel from watching their live content. Blocked viewers will also be unable to view the streams.
Although Twitch hinted at this feature two months ago, it is currently only available to some users. However, it is expected to be accessible to all content creators in the coming weeks.
This new feature represents a significant step forward in Twitch’s efforts to combat harassment and maintain a safe and positive environment for both streamers and viewers.
While this feature is a positive development, it does have some limitations. Banned viewers can still watch livestreams through incognito windows or while logged out of their Twitch accounts. They can also access past broadcasts, VODs, highlights, and clips on channels.
Concerns have been raised about these loopholes, and the community is urging Twitch to find a solution promptly. One suggestion is to require viewers to log in to watch streams, which would help address the issue.
Despite these limitations, the community has warmly welcomed the new feature. Many streamers and viewers have praised Twitch for its responsiveness to user feedback and ongoing efforts to create a safer platform.
For them, this latest feature is the icing on the cake.
In addition to this feature, Twitch implemented a ban evasion detection system that utilizes machine learning in 2021. However, instead of being automatic, the system flags suspicious accounts for moderators to review and take appropriate action.
