Ubisoft Montreal to Lay Off 98 Workers in Restructuring Effort

Tim Price

Ubisoft’s Montreal branch, known for creating popular game series like Rainbow Six: Siege and Far Cry, has announced that it will be laying off 98 employees. The decision comes as part of a larger effort to streamline operations and improve efficiency within the company.

In a statement provided to Kotaku and the government of Quebec, Ubisoft explained that they have been exploring ways to enhance their collective success in the long term. As a result, they have made the difficult decision to reorganize their Canadian studios’ general and administrative functions, leading to a reduction in headcount at their VFX studio, Hybride, and their global IT team. This will affect a total of 124 positions.

It is important to note that this restructuring does not impact Ubisoft’s production teams, which means that ongoing projects like the Far Cry series and Rainbow Six: Siege will continue unaffected.

The decision to lay off employees comes after reports of discontent among Ubisoft Montreal staff regarding a return-to-office policy. Many employees were promised the option to work from home, but the implementation of the return-to-office policy was seen as a “soft layoff” aimed at reducing the workforce.

Ubisoft Montreal has been a successful branch of the company, with the Far Cry series and Rainbow Six: Siege contributing significantly to its success. These games have helped Ubisoft navigate challenging times for their flagship series, Assassin’s Creed. However, the company has faced setbacks in recent years, with projects like Skull and Bones experiencing delays and some games being canceled altogether.

During this transition, Ubisoft is committed to providing comprehensive support for the affected employees and expresses gratitude for their contributions to the company.

This is a breaking news story, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
