Unbelievable Glitch in Super Smash Bros. Melee Leaves Players Stunned

superadmin

Super Smash Bros. Melee is known for its quirky physics and unexpected interactions, but a glitch discovered by top player Cody Schwab takes the cake. In a recent tweet, Schwab shared a video of a bizarre glitch that occurred between a Ness and Fox player on the Fountain of Dreams stage. The glitch left players and fans astounded, showcasing the depth and complexity of this 21-year-old game.

The glitch begins with Ness standing on a platform that is being lowered. Despite being above and behind him, Fox manages to grab Ness, surprising many viewers. However, this can be explained by the frame data of Fox’s grab, which allows him to grab opponents even when they are behind him.

After successfully grabbing Ness, Fox performs a down throw on the edge of the platform as it submerges into the stage. Fox’s down throw has two unique properties: it launches the opponent straight downwards when performed at the edge of a platform or stage, and it displaces the opponent’s environment collision box (ECB). The ECB determines whether a character lands on a platform when they jump towards it. If the entire ECB is not above the platform, the character falls through instead of landing on it.

In this glitch, the combination of the ECB displacement caused by Fox’s down throw and the platform submerging into the stage results in Ness’ ECB being positioned below the stage. The Ness player attempts to tech the throw using the shield button, unaware that the game now considers them below the stage. As a result, the shield button registers as an airdodge, leaving Ness with no chance of recovery.

This single Melee clip showcases multiple aspects of the game’s intricate mechanics and glitches. Some may question how a game with such quirks has maintained a dedicated fanbase, especially in the competitive scene. However, as an active player in the community, I find it fascinating. With each new discovery, we deepen our understanding and appreciation for this beloved game.
