We’ve all had our fair share of strange encounters while playing games online, but nothing quite compares to the mind-boggling experience of witnessing an otherworldly ping spike in VALORANT. During a recent game of Swiftplay on Pearl, one player’s ping skyrocketed to an astonishing 1,960 milliseconds (ms), just shy of reaching the 2,000 mark. High ping is the ultimate nightmare for any multiplayer shooter enthusiast, and VALORANT players are no exception.
If you’re not familiar with the term “ping,” it refers to the time it takes for data or inputs to travel from your device to an online server and back. In VALORANT, it represents the duration it takes for the game server to register your movements or actions and relay them back to you. Most players aim for a ping range of five to 50, where even the higher end only amounts to a mere 0.05 seconds.
However, a ping of 1,960 translates to a staggering 1.96 seconds, meaning this player’s inputs were taking nearly two whole seconds to reach the VALORANT game server and return. Such an exceptionally high ping caused the game to struggle in registering their inputs, resulting in the ability to spam Jett’s movement abilities multiple times in a row. It also caused the enemy players in front of them to seemingly vanish, their Cloudburst smokes failing to deploy, and being revealed by Fade’s Haunt despite not being within range when it was cast.
As bizarre as this spectacle was, it seems that this player has experienced even worse. In the comments of their post, they mentioned that their ping was “only” around 2,000 milliseconds, recalling that the highest they’ve encountered was approximately 16,000. This mind-boggling figure would mean it takes a staggering 16 seconds for information to travel between the server and their computer, making the clip above feel like playing on a local area network (LAN) in comparison.
If you find yourself in a similar situation, it is crucial to reach out to Riot support or at least check your internet connection for the sake of your gaming experience.
