Unlocking Containers in Starfield: A Clever Trick to Save Skill Points

Derek Morgan

With over 220 hours of gameplay, Reddit user Sea-Charge-3132 has discovered a useful mechanic in Starfield. Instead of risking their in-game credibility by attempting to unlock containers they shouldn’t, they found a way to get someone else to do it for them.

The key skill involved is called ‘Manipulation,’ which allows players to force an NPC of equal or lower level to obey commands for a limited time. This skill can be obtained either through the skill tree by investing 10 points into the ‘Social’ branch or by completing the Ryujin faction questline and earning the Internal Neuromap device.

In Sea-Charge’s video demonstration, the power of Manipulation is activated through the Social tab, which appears when scanning an NPC. By using this skill, players can send the NPC to unlock the desired container.

Some may see this as a roundabout solution to a task that can be done directly, but there are potential benefits. By obtaining the Internal Neuromap early in the game, players can save skill points that would have been spent on Lockpicking. Instead, these points can be invested in the ‘Stealth’ skill, which provides more utility in the field. At rank four, players become significantly harder to detect while sneaking, and opening doors in stealth does not alert enemies. With the help of Manipulation and a skilled lockpicker NPC, players can have access to every container in the game.

So, while it may seem like a hassle for a bit of fun, this trickery opens up new possibilities and allows players to focus on other skills and abilities. Crime does pay, after all.
