Unveiling the Pokémon TCG: 151 Set – A Quest for Rare Cards

Xavier Ward

The highly anticipated Pokémon TCG set of 2023, Pokémon 151, has finally arrived, featuring new cards and artwork for all the original Pokémon from the Red, Green, and Blue versions. With a total of 207 cards to collect, let’s dive into a handful of packs and see how lucky we can get!

This special set, released annually by The Pokémon Company, offers limited products such as Elite Trainer Boxes, Ultra Premium Collections, Booster Bundles, and more. Unfortunately, there is no booster box available for this set, so we’ll have to rely on smaller options to get our hands on some packs.

Prior to the official release, The Pokémon Company kindly provided me with a selection of early 151 products to open. I received an Elite Trainer Box, Booster Bundle, and Alakazam ex Collection. With 19 packs in total, my goal was to pull at least one of the highly sought-after Illustration Rares like Nidokinge ex or Zapdos ex.

However, luck was not on my side this time. Unlike opening a booster box, which guarantees a few big pulls, opening a mix of packs from different products resulted in fewer high rarity cards. Nevertheless, the focus of this set is on the Illustrator Rares, so let’s see what we managed to pull.

Our Best Pulls from Pokémon TCG: 151

Starting with the nine packs from the 151 Elite Trainer Box, I was able to pull an Illustrator Rare Poliwhirl and a full art Ninetails ex. The Poliwhirl card, one of my personal favorites, showcases stunning artwork. While the full art Ninetails ex didn’t impress me as much, the normal holographic cards in this set are still incredible, featuring amazing art for Pokémon like Aerodactyl, Dodrio, and Flareon.

In the Booster Bundle, which included six packs, I had similar luck. I managed to pull a full art Wigglytuff ex and the Illustrator Rare Dragonair, another card I was hoping to add to my collection.

The Alakazam Ex Collection was the product I was most excited about. This set marks the first time in over 20 years that the entire Abra line has been featured in a TCG set. The holographic finish on the Abra and Kadabra cards, along with the guaranteed Alakazam ex with alternate art, made it a worthwhile addition to my collection. From the four packs included in this set, I also pulled a highly detailed Mewtwo card and another holo Energy card.

Overall, the retail value of these three products would have been around $99 at launch pricing. While I didn’t manage to pull the big hits like Charizard ex IR, Erika’s Invitation, or Zapdos ex IR that I was hoping for, I still obtained cards worth approximately $30 on the secondhand market.

If you’re interested in getting your own Pokémon TCG: Scarlet and Violet 151 products, they are now available. You can also explore previous sets to see if any catch your eye.
