Valve’s development team for Counter-Strike 2 (CS2) has announced that they will not be incorporating non-fungible tokens (NFTs) into the game. In an interview with PCGamer, the developers stated that they lack sufficient knowledge about NFTs and therefore do not feel comfortable including them in CS2.
The team at Valve emphasized their commitment to making decisions that align with the interests of their community. While there has been discussion about NFTs in relation to Counter-Strike items, Valve admitted that they do not possess enough understanding of NFTs to contribute to the conversation.
It is worth noting that Valve explicitly prohibits the release of games containing NFTs on its platform, Steam. As a result, neither CS:GO nor CS2 have integrated NFTs in any capacity.
Valve also clarified that CS2 was always intended to replace CS:GO, and they made every effort to ensure that players could retain their progress and cherished skin collections in the new title. Throughout the development process, the team worked on supporting all CS:GO weapons, stickers, agents, and music in CS2.
Skins have played a significant role in the monetization system of CS:GO since the introduction of the Arms Deal update in 2013. This update revolutionized game financing and monetization, paving the way for the widespread use of microtransactions.
With the emergence of blockchain technology, cryptocurrencies, and NFTs, the gaming industry naturally became interested in exploring these new possibilities. However, Valve’s stance on NFTs remains unchanged, and they currently have no plans to incorporate them into their first-person shooter games.
It is important to note that the value of NFTs has significantly declined, even for the rarest and most expensive tokens, rendering them nearly worthless. Perhaps in the future, Valve’s position may change, but for now, NFTs will not be a part of their FPS games.
