One of the oldest Super Smash Bros. Melee pros, Johnny “S2J” Kim, emerged victorious in a highly competitive New York event. Despite his ranking at 23rd, S2J showcased his skills by defeating several top-15 players in the world.
The Function in Brooklyn on November 12 featured a talented lineup, including Jmook, Aklo, Chem, and the return of renowned Ice Climbers player SluG. Although S2J’s performances this year had been somewhat stagnant, he proved why he should never be underestimated. He dominated the winners bracket, securing a spot in the top eight of the 259-player tournament.
In the top eight, S2J faced off against SluG, who had just caused an upset by defeating the tournament favorite, Jmook. S2J ended SluG’s winning streak, sending him to the losers bracket and advancing to the winners finals against Aklo.
Aklo, known as “The King of New York” for his impressive performances against out-of-region players, posed a tough challenge for S2J. Despite a strong start in game one, S2J ultimately lost the next three games convincingly. However, after defeating Chem in the losers finals, he earned a spot in the grand finals for a rematch against Aklo.
The grand finals of The Function were filled with intense momentum swings. S2J initially won the first two games, seemingly on track for a 3-0 victory and a bracket reset. However, Aklo fought back and tied the score at 2-2. In the final game of the first set, S2J executed a crucial edge guard, extending his tournament life.
In the bracket reset, S2J amazed the crowd with a signature “Johnny stock,” his ability to secure a win with a single grab. He then proceeded to win the next two games on Final Destination, despite it being considered Falcon’s weakest stage against Fox, ultimately clinching the tournament with a 3-0 victory.
S2J not only defeated “The King of New York” twice but also emerged as the champion of one of the most competitive New York events of the year. This victory propelled him back into the spotlight and solidified his status as a player to watch in the upcoming months.
