Baldur’s Gate 3 continues to reign supreme as the most-played game among Steam Deck users in September, surpassing the highly anticipated title Starfield, according to Valve’s latest data. Despite Starfield’s immense hype and release earlier this year, it couldn’t dethrone Baldur’s Gate 3 from its top spot, showcasing the game’s enduring popularity.
In September, Valve released a list of the top 20 most popular games on Steam Deck based on hours played. Unsurprisingly, Baldur’s Gate 3 and Starfield claimed the first and second positions respectively. However, what stands out is that even two months after its release, Starfield couldn’t surpass the success of Baldur’s Gate 3, which speaks volumes about the game’s appeal.
This discrepancy can be attributed to both the games’ performance on Steam Deck and Baldur’s Gate 3’s exceptional sales. While Baldur’s Gate 3 is officially “Verified” for the console, indicating its compatibility and optimized performance, players have reported issues running Starfield on the handheld device, even on low settings. Currently, Starfield’s compatibility status is listed as “Unknown,” meaning Valve is still learning about how to optimize the game for Steam Deck. However, this hasn’t deterred adventurous space explorers from putting the hardware to the test, as evident from Valve’s most-played list.
Baldur’s Gate 3 also claimed the top spot among Steam Deck users in August, which comes as less of a surprise. The game received critical acclaim upon its release in early August, quickly climbing the ranks to become one of Steam’s top 10 highest player peaks of all time.
Below Baldur’s Gate 3 and Starfield, Cyberpunk 2077 secured the third position on Steam Deck’s most-played list for September, followed by Elden Ring and Armored Core 6. The remaining games on the list include a mix of recent releases such as Sea of Stars and Dave the Diver, as well as beloved classics like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Red Dead Redemption 2.
Valve regularly shares these monthly recaps on the first of each month, so fans can look forward to the next update on November 1st to see if Baldur’s Gate 3 can maintain its dominance for the third consecutive month. If it does, it will be yet another remarkable achievement for Larian Studios, adding to their already impressive list of accolades.
