ByteDance, the publisher of Marvel Snap, is planning to wind down its gaming brand Nuverse and step away from mainstream video games. The decision to restructure the gaming business was made after a review, although specific details have not been provided. Employees will be instructed to stop working on unreleased games by December, and ByteDance may divest from already released titles, including Marvel Snap.
While Marvel Snap has gained a dedicated following, it has not achieved commercial success. ByteDance’s future plans in the gaming industry remain uncertain, but it has been stated that casual games on TikTok will not be affected.
It is unlikely that the development of Marvel Snap will be completely halted, as the game regularly receives new content and updates. Second Dinner, the independent game studio based in California that created Marvel Snap, may take over the game entirely or seek another publisher to collaborate with.
Fortunately, the Marvel license is tied to Second Dinner and will not be impacted by ByteDance’s decision. This allows Marvel Snap to transition to a new publisher smoothly.
Marvel Snap, which won Mobile Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2022, remains popular. It was released on Steam in August 2023 and has received positive reviews, with 84 percent of all-time reviews on the platform being favorable.
