European Teams Disappoint at 2023 LoL World Championship

The 2023 World Championship has ended in disappointment for European League of Legends fans as all of the region’s representatives, including top seed G2 Esports, were eliminated from the competition. G2 dropped out of the tournament following a series loss to China’s Bilibili Gaming.

G2’s League general manager, Romain Bigeard, shared the team’s full scrim schedule and results on Twitter, revealing shocking records against BLG and NRG Esports. Despite impressive practice records against top LPL teams, G2’s early exit proves that good practice doesn’t always translate to success on stage.

In fact, G2 had overwhelmingly winning records in scrims against the teams they lost to, with a 7-0 record against NRG and a 10-3 record against BLG. However, their performance on stage was dominated by NRG in two one-sided games, while the BLG series was a closer but still resulted in G2’s loss.

G2’s unexpected departure from Worlds surprised the League community, especially considering the team’s extensive preparation for the event. They put in countless hours of practice, including scrims, solo queue games, VODs, and various training exercises. They also focused on their physical well-being, controlling their food, sleep, and overall lifestyle.

Romain expressed that this loss was particularly tough for G2 since they had invested so much effort into creating the perfect system for the team. Moving forward, G2’s League division will need to make important decisions regarding their roster and training system to bounce back from this disappointing finish in 2024.
