Several Gearbox employees have been let go by the company as part of a restructuring process announced by its parent company, Embracer Group. The layoffs came as a surprise to the affected employees, who were informed that their contracts would be terminated at the end of their probation month. Translator Allan Jacquemart, one of the employees affected, described the situation as being “simply victims of the group’s restructuring.”
The layoffs are believed to be a result of Embracer Group’s efforts to restructure following a challenging year. In a Q4 report, CEO Lars Wingefors acknowledged that the company had faced difficulties due to game delays, weaker consumer demand, and lackluster reception for certain releases. Additionally, a major strategic partnership that had been negotiated for seven months fell through, resulting in further setbacks for the company.
The exact number of employees laid off at Gearbox is unclear. Embracer Group recently released its Interim Report for Q1 2023 and announced that its annual general meeting will take place on Thursday, Sept. 21.
