Riot Games is making significant changes to the item system in League of Legends, including the removal of Mythic items in 2024. These changes are aimed at addressing the difficulty of balancing gameplay systems around each champion class and the multitude of different build paths available to players.
While some Mythic items will be adjusted and nerfed to fit into the Legendary item class, others, including the iconic AD carry item Galeforce, will be completely removed from the shop. Lead designer Matt “Phroxzon” Leung-Harrison explained that the original intention of Mythic items was to explore a unique version of League where items helped create “augmented champion fantasies.” However, these items have proven challenging to balance, not only for existing champions but also for future champion designs.
As part of the item system restructuring, Riot plans to reintroduce stacking items while reducing the power of former Mythic items to align them with their Legendary counterparts. This means removing major “kit warping items” like Galeforce from the shop, although some “legacy exceptions” such as Zhonya’s Hourglass will be retained due to their availability in the original item shop system.
Looking ahead, Riot aims to reduce item complexity by focusing on one clear unique effect and a maximum of three stat boosters per item. The overall power of items will also be reduced to prevent players from overloading themselves with stats through itemization. While this may make some items less exciting, it will allow individual League champions to shine brighter in their own unique ways.
