Missing CS:GO? Play the Obscure Version with Popular and Bizarre Community Servers

Derek Morgan

The recent shift to CS2 on Sept. 27 left out CS:GO’s community servers, leaving fans longing for custom maps in Valve’s newest FPS game. However, there is still a way to access a legacy version of the old shooter game, although it is limited to community maps.

While CS2 does not yet support community servers, players can still enjoy popular and peculiar player-curated experiences in CS:GO. These include servers based on Final Fantasy VII, Apex Legends, The Legend of Zelda, Need 4 Speed, and more.

Among the community content, surf maps have been particularly popular, providing a lighthearted break between competitive matches. The Final Fantasy VII Mako Reactor mod, released in the 2010s, remains a trending community map in CS:GO. Another popular mod is Boat Escape, where players attempt to flee from zombies in a boat.

If you want to play CS:GO’s community servers today, follow these simple steps:

  1. Open your Steam library and right-click on Counter-Strike 2.
  2. Select “Properties” and go to the Betas tab.
  3. Choose “csgo_legacy: Legacy Version of CS:GO” from the menu.
  4. After the update is completed, launch the game and choose between CS2 and CS:GO.

Keep in mind that CS:GO no longer has official matchmaking, so the original competitive five-vs-five experience is not available. However, you can still join community versions of popular maps like Mirage, Dust 2, Inferno, and more.

While there may be some difficulties finding or joining community servers, CS:GO is far from deserted, with over 48,000 players online at the time of writing. It seems that everyone is enjoying the weirdest side of this classic FPS game.
