Nintendo has recently filed patent applications for a new handheld dual-screen device that bears resemblance to the original Nintendo DS. The patent describes a device made up of two detachable parts, each with its own display. These parts can be connected in two different ways, allowing for both closed and open usage.
The patent application, filed on November 11, 2022, also mentions that the detached parts of the device can communicate wirelessly, enabling two players to enjoy multiplayer gaming on the same device. When connected, the device functions similarly to the Nintendo DS or 3DS.
This innovative product aims to combine the best features of Nintendo Switch consoles, offering both portability and the ability to play with friends. While it is a handheld-only console designed for on-the-go gaming, the detachable screens allow for shared gaming experiences.
In addition to this dual-screen device, Nintendo has also filed patents for a single-display version, a display housing, a cover for the Nintendo Switch, a cooling device, and another portable gaming device. However, it is important to note that the release of these products is not guaranteed, as patents often serve as a means of protecting potential ideas rather than confirming their production.
If these devices were to be released, it could potentially bring back classic DS games to a new generation of Nintendo consoles.
