As VGC players eagerly await its entry into the competitive format, discussions have begun on which of Ogerpon’s four forms is the most viable in competitive play.
What sets Ogerpon apart is its ability to change forms based on the mask it wears, altering not only its typing but also its Ability. This gives it the flexibility to be pure Grass with Defiant, Grass/Fire with Mold Breaker, Grass/Water with Water Absorb, or Grass/Rock with Sturdy.
In a recent YouTube video, two-time regional champion Joseph Ugarte shared his insights on each of Ogerpon’s forms and offered his opinion on the best choice for VGC.
Ugarte believes that the Grass/Fire Hearthflame Mask Ogerpon is the standout form due to its synergy with popular Pokémon in the meta, such as Heatran and Tornadus. With Mold Breaker, Hearthflame Ogerpon can bypass Heatran’s Flash Fire ability, denying it the immunity to Fire-type attacks. This makes it a potent threat that Heatran cannot easily switch into.
Furthermore, Hearthflame Ogerpon pairs exceptionally well with Tornadus. By utilizing Tornadus’ Prankster ability and Sunny Day, the duo can set up the sun on the field, boosting Ogerpon’s Fire-type Ivy Cudgel. Additionally, activating Ogerpon’s Embody Aspect ability through Terastallizing further enhances its Attack stat. With Ivy Cudgel’s high critical hit ratio, Hearthflame Ogerpon becomes a formidable force capable of tearing through opposing teams.
Ugarte’s opinion is echoed by other VGC players, as seen in a Reddit thread where players are voting for their preferred Ogerpon form in Teal Mask competitive play. Currently, around half of the votes are in favor of the Hearthflame form.
